Professor Dr Guido Grosse

Co-Investigator, Alfred Wegener Institute (AWI)

Guido Grosse is the head of the section Periglacial Research at the Alfred Wegener Institute (AWI), Helmholtz Centre for Polar and Marine Research, Potsdam, Germany, since 2016 and professor for Permafrost in the Earth System at the University of Potsdam.

His research focuses on Arctic permafrost characteristics and dynamics and its interactions with the climate system. He received an ERC Starting Grant in 2013 which directed his research interest towards applying remote sensing methods to understand rapidly changing landscapes and to quantify how permafrost carbon pools and carbon cycle are affected.

In CACOON, permafrost carbon will be studied as a key end member delivered into the nearshore ocean. AWI’s Periglacial Research section has strong expertise in the dynamics and characteristics of permafrost and its carbon stocks, maintains dedicated laboratory resources, and provides critical field station access to the Lena Delta. Guido’s role in the project team as senior project partner includes facilitating the lab and fieldwork resources at the Periglacial Research section and support and mentoring of the New Investigator team Strauss and Mann.

CACOON is co-funded by the German Federal Ministry of Education and Research and by NERC.
