Dr Michael Karcher is a director and research scientist at the science company Ocean Atmosphere Systems, and a senior researcher at the Alfred Wegener Institute (AWI).
He is a physical oceanographer by education and his research interests are focusing on understanding the dynamics of the coupled ice-ocean-atmosphere system of the northern hemisphere.
Michael is a co-investigator in two CAO projects: Eco-Light and APEAR.
In the Eco-Light project, he is involved in the improvement and testing of parameterizations for energy and light transmission through snow and sea ice for modelling, based, inter alia, on new measurements performed as part of the project.
In the APEAR project, he focuses on understanding ocean circulation changes in the Arctic, based on observations and modelling.
