I am a PhD student and member of Professor Dr Anja Engel’s group at the GEOMAR, Kiel, Germany. My aim is to investigate the microbial turnover of organic matter in the Arctic Ocean.
Within Micro-ARC, we aim to combine biogeochemical and ecological approaches in the Fram Strait. By sampling both the plankton and bacterial contributions we hope to understand the carbon flow within the microbial loop of the water column.
My contribution to this project lies in combining my past ecological expertise with biogeochemical rates in order to focus on bacterial processes. I will use elemental, molecular and isotope measurements to assess the microbial production rates. With my research, I hope to provide a more comprehensive understanding of the organic carbon cycling in regard to the current climate change in the Arctic Ocean.
