Mark Stevenson is a Research Associate at Newcastle University, School of Civil Engineering and Geosciences, working on the organic geochemical aspects of the ChAOS project.
His PhD research focused on reconstructing biomarker records of carbon cycling in lakes on Disko Island, West Greenland, to help to understand how aquatic ecology and biogeochemistry respond to external stressors.
In his current research Mark is applying his biomarker knowledge to ocean sediments and will be sampling sediment cores on-board the RRS James Clark Ross, followed by conducting the analysis of a diverse range of lipid biomarkers to quantify the lability and source origin of organic matter on the Arctic ocean seafloor.
